How Spirotech enhances its competitive edge with certified EPDs

Spirotech wanted to gain a clear understanding of the environmental impact of various product groups. This was both to operate more sustainably and to meet the growing customer demand for transparent product information. Without certified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), the company could no longer meet the expectations of key customers. It was time to act.

IN BRIEF

A validated EPD for the SpiroTrap product group

The challenge

Without a verified materials passport, Spirotech could no longer meet the growing customer demand for sustainability information.

The solution

A certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), supported by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for various product groups.

Our approach

We handled the entire EPD process end to end, from data collection to certification, and implemented a streamlined EPD methodolog

The result

Spirotech retains its market access, strengthens its competitive position, and lays the groundwork for company-wide sustainability reporting.

“For some markets, an EPD is a must-have. We have now not only addressed a concrete market demand but also laid the foundation for a broader sustainability strategy and CSRD compliance.”

PAUL DE BRUIN, Chief Commercial Officer

The challenge

Unanswered customer questions

An increasing number of Spirotech's customers require concrete insight into the environmental impact of their components. This is driven by due diligence but also by their own need to meet strict reporting requirements and market demands.

Distributors in several countries indicated that some products without a certified EPD would no longer be eligible for tenders. To meet this urgent demand, they brought in Mantis.

But necessity wasn't the only reason for Spirotech to get ahead of it. An EPD project for the 'SpiroTrap' product group was also the first step towards broader sustainability reporting, preparing the company to report in line with the CSRD or via EcoVadis.

“We chose Mantis because of the team's accessibility and their level of expertise. The experts provided structure, offered pragmatic input, and translated complex regulations into workable solutions.”

PAUL DE BRUIN, Chief Commercial Officer

The Solution

A recognized EPD as a solid basis for reporting

Together with Spirotech, we started working on an initial EPD for 'SpiroTrap', a widely used product line of dirt separators for heating and cooling systems. These components remove dirt and air from system water, which is essential for the efficiency and lifespan of HVAC installations.

This project went beyond merely meeting market demands:it was a crucial step toward broader, well-founded sustainability reporting. The solution had two parts:

An EPD that meets market demand
This enables Spirotech to remain active in the Scandinavian market without hindrance.

A strategic model for further EPDs and sustainability reporting ‍By embedding the EPD process within the organization, Spirotech is systematically taking steps toward broader CSRD compliance and further certification.

“The certificate helps us retain customers and strengthen our market position. We can now objectively demonstrate our environmentally conscious operations. At the same time, it helps us make well-considered choices for further sustainability efforts.”

PAUL DE BRUIN, Chief Commercial Officer at Spirotech

Our approach

From obstacle to opportunity and streamlined EPD process

1. Mapping Market Requirements

• Gaining insight into customer expectations and regulations such as the EU Green Claims.
• Determining which product groups needs an EPD first.

2. Data Collection and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

• Identifying relevant emission sources and impact factors across the product life cycle, using an LCA.
• Working with Spirotech and its suppliers to collect the right data.
• Building a robust life cycle model as the basis for the EPD.
• Translating the model and its linked data into an impact analysis.

3. EPD preparation and certification

• Structuring and documenting LCA results according to recognized standards.
• Guidance during the validation and certification of the EPD.
• Ensuring compliance with technical and market requirements.

4. Embedding within the organization

• Development of a streamlined process for future EPDs.
• Integrating the EPD methodology as a framework for material and product choices.
• Preparing the organization for strategic improvements.

“An intensive process was neatly divided into phases and milestones. Mantis brought structure and direction to the entire process. We wouldn't have been able to complete the exercise so quickly and efficiently on our own. The results followed within the set timeframe.”

PAUL DE BRUIN, Chief Commercial Officer at Spirotech

The results

Secured market access and a stronger competitive position

Spirotech obtained an externally certified EPD for the 'SpiroTrap' product group in November 2024. The direct ROI of the certification can't be fully measured yet, but the strategic benefits are already clear:

No more market barriers. Thanks to an externally validated EPD, distributors can keep offering Spirotech products throughout Scandinavia.

Rapid scaling to other product groups. The EPD methodology is now being applied to other priority product groups.

Preparation for CSRD compliance. The EPD forms a solid basis for broader sustainability reporting through the CSRD and other frameworks, which the company is now actively pursuing.

Foundation for improvement. LCA data shows Spirotech which actions will have the most impact and points the way to more sustainable product development.
